Surgery

Surgery is seldom used to treat low back pain and for good reason. In most cases, the cause of low back pain cannot be helped by surgery. There are many people that have been helped by back surgery but I have heard far too many stories of people who are right back where they started from maybe 2-7 years after the surgery. The reason is fairly simple. The surgery fixes the immediate problem but not the condition that caused the problem in the first place. In other words, most back problems are the result of abuse and poor habits over a long period of time. The back breaks down and surgery is used. The problem is that after surgery we go back to the old bad habits again and the condition/symptoms return.

Most back surgeries are performed to treat herniated discs. Still, most people with herniated discs do not need surgery. Herniated disc surgery may be used when a disc problem is causing severe and disabling sciatica. Surgery is also sometimes done to treat spinal stenosis if it is causing severe symptoms. As with herniated disc, most people with spinal stenosis do not need surgery.

There is no doubt that surgery has its place and is definitely necessary in some cases. It can be a necessity for spinal fractures that have caused bone spurs or fragments to press on the nerve roots. It can also be necessary for spinal tumors or rare infections.

Fortunately most back pain sufferers can get relief without resorting to surgery. By identifying and addressing the underlying muscle imbalances and postural dysfunctions behind their back pain, many back pain sufferers can get better results without surgery and avoid the inherent risks.
