Stenosis

There are actually two different types of spinal stenosis. The first is lumbar stenosis and the other is cervical stenosis.

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis is the more common of the 2 types and is when the nerve roots in the lumbar region of the spine are compressed as they exit the vertebral openings which can lead to sciatica.
  • Cervical spinal stenosis is much more dangerous because it occurs in the cervical area of the spine and compresses the spinal cord. This can lead to serious symptoms such as weakness or even paralysis.
The 3 most common non-surgical treatments for spinal stenosis are a modification of activities, exercise and epidural injections. While none of these treatments will "cure" the condition, they can help relieve pain when done under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional or physical therapist. As is the case with all other back pain conditions, surgery should be used only as a last option.
