Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine from side to side. It can develop as a single curvature in the shape of a "C" or a double curve in the shape of an "S". It is not completely understood but there are 4 main classifications of scoliosis...congenital, neurolomuscular, degenerative and idiopathic. Idiopathic scoliosis is by far the most common form and it is called "idiopathic" because its cause is yet unknown.
Symptoms of scoliosis may include uneven shoulders, one hip higher than the other, an uneven waist, one shoulder blade that juts out further than the other or leaning to one side. Severe cases can cause back pain and can also begin impacting other organs such as the lungs. People with sciolosis need to work closely with their doctor as severe case may require surgery while others may require a back brace and physical therapy to help alleviate any pain caused by the condition.
