Sciatica

Sciatica is simply an irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. It is not classified as a back condition itself but rather a symptom of some other back pain condition. The sciatic nerve begins in the lumbar region of the spine from tiny nerve roots joining together to form the largest nerve in the body.

While there are many causes of sciatica, the most common reason for it is a herniated disc. When a disc herniates or ruptures, it pushes out into the nerve root causing varying degrees of pain, numbness and/or tingling down one or both legs.

Treatment for sciatica involves identifying the underlying cause. Once this is determined, different modalities may be applied. Anti-inflammatory medications along with physical therapy are common practices in this case.
