Piriformis syndrome is generally descibed as an irritation of the sciatic nerve in the buttocks area by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle begins at the front of the sacrum, passes through the greater sciatic notch finally attaching to the top of the femur. The well-known gluteus maximus muscle covers the piriformis muscle.
Piriformis syndrome is just one of the causes of sciatica (pain, numbness and/or tingling down the lower extremities). The sciatic nerve passes along the same corridor as the piriformis muscle and sometimes gets entangled with the muscle. Contraction of the muscle can increase sciatic pain severly.
Piriformis syndrome can be treated in a number of ways including rest and stretching exercises along with physical therapy and pain and anti-inflammatory medications.
