Nearly everyone will experience some kind of low back pain at some point in their life. Other than the common cold/flu, a low back ailment is the most common reason for people missing work.
The majority of low back injuries are related to muscle or ligament problems but can also be disc related, arthritis, an SI joint dysfunction, etc. It is important to note that barring an athletic injury or some other kind of trauma, most back problems do not happen overnight and are usually the result of years of abuse to the spine and bad habits.
If you aren't sure what caused your back pain and you have accompanying symptoms such as severe or prolonged pain, loss of bladder or bowel control or shooting pain or numbness in your lower extremities, you should play it safe and make an appointment to see your doctor. If you are experiencing mild pain with no other symptoms there's a good chance that you've caught the problem in time and can reverse the situation.
