A Herniated Disc diagnosis can be a little confusing because doctors use some other terms interchangeably that all mean the same thing. You may also hear this referred to as a ruptured disc, bulging disc, slipped disc, disc protrusion, etc. They are all terms used to describe the same thing.
A herniated disc is simply a rupture of the "spongy" disc that cushions and separates the vertabrae. When this happens, a portion of the disc pushes outside its normal boundary. This causes the spinal nerves and spinal cord to become pinched.
Once the doctor has run the patient through a series of tests and suspects a herniated disc, an MRI is usually ordered in order to confirm the original findings.
