Degenerative Disc Disease is not actually a disease at all. It is simply a natural aging process whereby the discs in the spine "degenerate" because of the every day wear and tear on the spine.
Degenerative Disc Disease is fairly common and it is estimated that between 20% and 30% of people ages 30 to 50 will experience some degree of DDD. It is important to note that not all people will experience pain as every person is different.
Your doctor may be able to properly diagnose DDD during a physical examination but typically an MRI will be ordered in order to confirm these findings.
