Back Pain Conventional Treatments
|
Chiropractic can be generally defined as a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractors employ a drug-free, hands-on approach to treat neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors is known as a spinal manipulation or spinal adjustment. The purpose is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement for whatever reason. This restriction can be caused by a single traumatic event like improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetition like sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, these injuries cause physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function. A chiropractic adjustment of the affected joints restores mobility which alleviates pain and muscle tightness.
In many cases, such as headaches, neck pain or lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment but chiropractic care may also be used to complement "conventional" medical treatments by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition. A chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort although patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment that usually disappears within 24 to 48 hours.
